At nine o'clock on the evening of the eighth day of the eighth month of the year 1839, eight earnest young men, all students at Miami University, held the first meeting of Beta Theta Pi in the Hall of the Union Literary Society, an upper room in the old college building, known as "Old Main."

The eight founders in the order in which their names appear in the minutes were:

John Reily Knox, 1839
Samuel Taylor Marshall, 1840
David Linton, 1839
James George Smith, 1840
Charles Henry Hardin, 1841
John Holt Duncan, 1840
Michael Clarkson Ryan, 1839
Thomas Boston Gordon, 1840
“of ever honored memory.”

(In mentioning the Founders, full names are always used, and they are referred to as “of ever honored memory.”)

John Reily Knox, Founder

Among the top 20% of college fraternities in size, Beta Theta Pi was the first to be founded west of the Allegheny Mountains and the first to locate a chapter west of the Mississippi River.

The Fraternity was founded August 8, 1839, at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. Since 1839, Beta Theta Pi Fraternity has initiated more than 160,000 men at colleges and universities throughout Canada and the United States. Beta continues to expand.

The Fraternity grew from the founding group to more than 75 chapters in its first 100 years, the last 60 years saw an increase to some 130 chapters and colonies. Beta believes in selecting outstanding young men and making good men better.

There are countless prominent Betas in the fields of business, education, entertainment, government, military, politics and sports. All members share the common belief in academic excellence, sense of tradition and brotherhood and unsullied friendship.

While brotherhood serves as the cornerstone of Beta Theta Pi, this lasting bond of friendship is cultivated by being a part of a group of individuals who share the same goals and values, constantly supporting each other in the pursuit of social, moral and cultural excellence.

The Objects of Beta Theta Pi

It shall be constituted as hereinafter provided and shall have for its objects the promotion of the moral and social culture of its members, the establishment of confidence and friendly relations among the universities and colleges of the United States and Canada, in securing unity of action and sympathy in matters of common interest among them, and the building up of a fraternity that recognizes mutual assistance in the honorable labors and aspirations of life, devotion to the cultivation of the intellect, unsullied friendship, and unfaltering fidelity, as objects worthy of the highest aim and purpose of associated effort.

In 1879, Beta Theta Pi once again exemplified her pioneering spirit by being the first fraternity to publish an open constitution.
