Remembering Victor Dominguez

One hundred actives and alumni participated in remembering Victor E. Dominguez, MD who passed away in 1996 of brain cancer

Victor’s family (two brothers, sister-in-law, parents, nieces and nephews) participated. His brother Jose, who was initiated the preceding Thursday evening and is roll #355, shared touching memories of Victor and then announced the first recipient of the Scholarship established in Victor’s memory at the School of Medicine. The recipient was Beta member, Chris Smith. The Dean of the School of Medicine, Dr. Betty Drees, briefly spoke and shared appreciation to Dominguez family for establishing the scholarship.

Nearly 75 Alumni Return to UMKC for Beta’s 25-Year Celebration

We’d like to thank the nearly 75 Epsilon Lambda alumni who came back for our 25-year celebration October 1-4, 2009.

The weekend kicked off with the initiation of Victor Dominguez’s brother, Jose, on Thursday night. He was initiated with a roll number of 355. Founders Brian Sieck, Jeff Kerby, Jim Burke and Pat Griffith were present for the initiation. We also held a memorial service/scholarship presentation ceremony for Victor on Saturday, October 3.

On Friday night, about 150 alumni and active members attended a social outing at the Levee and then moved to Ragland altRoad in the Power & Light District until the early hours of the morning.

Saturday was the biggest day of events. We started the day with alumni tours of the current Beta Houses at 5229 and 5225 Rockhill Road. In the afternoon, actives and alumni competed in the traditional flag football game. Alumni were very impressed with the efficiency of the active team. The alumni team suffered several injuries during the game: 1 broken collar bone, 1 broken finger and 1 torn thumb ligament requiring surgery. Since the matter of whether alumni can hang with the actives in a game of FLAG football, we will re-evaluate this activity for future alumni events...

The Saturday evening dinner at the Uptown Theater was a big hit.During dinner, several alumni lead singing of Beta songs.  Current chapter President, Andrew Iliff updated the alumni on the state of the chapter.  Past Chapter President Alex Barrett informed the crowd about the Knox Award requirements and the chapter’s ability to win 3 consecutive.  Alumni Harold Duke, Ferd Del Pizzo, Harry Jonas & Lloyd Kirk shared the history of the founding of the chapter.   Alumnus Sam Page, who ran as Democratic Lt Gov of MO candidate in ’08, shared stories about Beta’s involvement with UMKC student politics.  Mark Coburn and James Milburn shared sentiments about wanting more alumni events.

Several alumni and actives extended the weekend into Sunday, as a group tailgated and went to the Chiefs’ game.

Many of our alumni are still active within the chapter.  From finance to brotherhood, they continue to live up to the phrase, "Once a Beta, Always a Beta, Everywhere a Beta."  By joining Beta Theta Pi you will be part of a brotherhood that will help you succeed in any career.  Betas are everywhere, and know that a brother is dependable, respectable, and hard working.
