Philanthropy

The men of Beta Theta Pi have committed themselves to the betterment of the community through a myriad of services opportunities throughout the year. Even with a majority of our members being in a professional degree program, all of them still find time to give back to the community. Every semester each Beta performs over 20 hours of community service. Many of our members volunteer outside of our organized events.

Last year we built a retaining wall at the Kansas City Zoo in the kangaroo habitat. Many of our members also go to harvestors food drive and work there, as well as Sherwood Center (A school for autistic children).

In addition to small service projects, we also have an annual "Beta Week". We held Beta Week from April 19 to 23 this year.  We gave our time volunteering at Harvesters and the Sherwood Center.  California Pizza Kitchen also aided us in our efforts by donating a percent of proceeds to the Sherwood Center.  Along with donating their time at Harvesters and Sherwood Center, the sorority women participated in a cook off judged by Dr. Todor Gounev, a chemistry teacher at UMKC.  We also had a BBQ at the house to encourage the sorority women to stop by the the Beta House and sign posters decorated with their sorority letters.  A raffle took place over the course of the week concluding with the raffle prizes being given out during the annual Beta Rose Bowl.  The Beta Rose Bowl consisted of a flag football tournament for the sorority women of UMKC and other various activities such as a relay race and a dance.  Along with raffle tickets being sold to raise money, t-shirts were also sold with proceeds supporting the Sherwood Center.  While Beta Sigma Phi won the cook-off and Alpha Delta Pi won football, Delta Zeta was the overall winner of Beta Week.  The Sherwood Center is a non-profit organization that helps students and adults with autism which was started by three University of Missouri-Kansas City psychology students.  Over the Sherwood Center’s thirty-five years, they have changed the lives of many students and adults with autism and developmental disabilities.  Sherwood Center began in a church basement with only six students.  Today it is non-profit organization that services many students and adults in the Kansas City area.  The Sherwood Center is located at 7938 Chestnut, Kansas City, Missouri.
